About this qualification
The Functional Skills Qualification in English at Entry Level 3 is a nationally recognised course designed to help learners improve their everyday communication skills. The qualification focuses on practical, real world English. Lessons cover reading, writing and speaking and listening, helping you understand and respond in everyday situations at home, in the community or at work.
It can be taken throughout the year and is assessed under controlled conditions by centre staff, with external moderation by OCR.

What are Functional Skills?
Functional Skills are nationally recognised qualifications in English, maths and digital skills. They are designed to help learners apply what they learn in real life situations. These qualifications are widely used in schools, training programmes, apprenticeships and adult education.
At Entry Level 3, all components – reading, writing, and speaking and listening – are internally assessed and externally moderated. Assessments can be completed on paper or on screen, depending on the provider.

What you will learn
The course covers the following areas:
Reading short texts and identifying key points and meaning
Writing simple letters, emails, messages and forms
Using basic grammar, punctuation and spelling correctly
Understanding instructions, signage and directions
Speaking clearly in everyday situations such as appointments, schools and shops
Listening actively and responding appropriately in conversation
Lessons are practical and focused on helping you apply your learning straight away.
Assessment and moderation
Assessments are completed under controlled conditions using OCR-set tasks. Learners must complete and pass all three components: reading, writing and speaking and listening.
Speaking, Listening and Communication
You will take part in one one-to-one discussion and one group conversation. These will be based on familiar topics and are observed by your tutor.
Duration: 20 minutes
Reading
You will complete two tasks based on short everyday texts, answering both open and closed questions. You may use a dictionary or spelling and grammar tools, and your answers can be word processed.
Duration: 50 minutes
Writing
You will complete two short writing tasks such as a message, form or note. You’ll be assessed on punctuation, grammar, spelling and clarity. A dictionary and digital tools are allowed.
