1. Understand basic fire safety and what to do In the event of an emergency.
• 1.1 State the cost of fires in the workplace to businesses and individuals
• 1.2 State the common causes of workplace fires
• 1.3 List the duties and responsibilities of employees in relation to fire safety
• 1.4 List the duties and responsibilities of others in the event of a fire
• 1.5 State the actions to be taken in the event of a fire
• 1.6 List the methods available to raise the alarm in the event of a fire
• 1.7 State how to contact the emergency services

2. Understand the principles of fire risk control.
• 2.1 State the key elements for effective fire risk management in the workplace
• 2.2 List the components of the fire triangle
• 2.3 List the active and passive fire control measures

3. Understand the basics of practical fire safety.
• 3.1 State the safety precautions needed to be undertaken before using fire-fighting equipment
• 3.2 State the requirements needed to correctly service check fire-fighting equipment

4. Understand the principles of fire safety legislation under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

• 4.1 Define the role and the state the duties of the “responsible person” under the RRFSO 2005
• 4.2 Define the term “competent person” under the RRFSO 2005
• 4.3 State the role and the powers of the enforcing authorities
• 4.4 State the powers of the courts for breaches of the RRFSO 2005

5. Develop knowledge and understanding of how fire spreads and the behaviour of humans in the event of fire
• 5.1 Outline the common human behaviours in fire situations where training has not been undertaken
• 5.2 List the names of methods which cause heat to be transmitted during a fire

6. Develop knowledge and understanding of the role of the fire marshal
• 6.1 Define the role and responsibilities of a fire marshal
• 6.2 State the steps of a fire risk assessment in the workplace
• 6.3 State the content of an emergency plan in the workplace
• 6.4 State what information should be provided in a fire safety briefing
